MCAT Flashcards Extra 1.0
Maria Ahn
The Medical College Admission Test® (MCAT®) is a standardized,multiple-choice examination designed to assess the examinee'sproblem solving, critical thinking, and knowledge of scienceconcepts and principles prerequisite to the study of medicine.Scores are reported in Physical Sciences, Verbal Reasoning, andBiological Sciences. Almost all U.S. medical schools and manyCanadian schools require applicants to submit MCAT exam scores. Many schools do not accept MCAT exam scores that are more thanthree years old While there is no one way to prepare for the MCATexam, you should give yourself adequate time to prepare. The examis offered 25 or more times per year at Prometric centers.[15] Thenumber of administrations may vary each year. Most people who takethe MCAT are undergraduates in college in their Junior or Senioryear of college before they apply to medical school. Ever since theexam's duration was shortened to 4.5–5 hours, the test may beoffered either in the morning or in the afternoon. Some test dateshave both morning and afternoon administrations. The test consistsof four sections, listed in the order in which they areadministered on the day of the exam: Physical Sciences (PS) VerbalReasoning (VR) Biological Sciences (BS) Trial Section (optional)The Verbal Reasoning, Physical Sciences, and Biological Sciencessections are in multiple-choice format. The passages and questionsare predetermined, and thus do not change in difficulty dependingon the performance of the test taker (unlike, for example, thegeneral Graduate Record Examination). The Physical Sciences sectionassesses problem-solving ability in general chemistry and physicsand the Biological Sciences section evaluates these abilities inthe areas of biology and organic chemistry. The Verbal Reasoningsection evaluates the ability to understand, evaluate, and applyinformation and arguments presented in prose style. The BiologicalSciences section most directly correlates to success on the USMLEStep 1 exam, with a correlation coefficient of .553 vs .491 forPhysical Sciences and .397 for Verbal Reasoning. Predictably, MCATcomposite scores also correlate with USMLE Step 1 success. • Decksincluded: • Biology • Hormones • Nervous System • Chemistry • Terms• Organic Chemistry • Neumonics • Atomic Structure •
